چکیده

ABINOVITCH (I) in 1927 studied the effect of atropine on the absorption R of water and chloride from Thiry-Vella fistulas in two unanesthetized dogs. The atropine was administered either by subcutaneous injection or by placing it in the 0.9 per cent NaCl test solution. Rabinovitch stated that atropine increased both water and chloride absorption; however not all the data were presented, and no statistical analysis was performed to determine if differences observed were significant, hence the problem cannot be considered solved. The question is of considerable theoretic interest since atropine has marked effects on intestinal secretion and motility. The net uptake of a substance from the bowel might be influenced by either of these actions of atropine, or cholinergic blockade itself might have an effect on rate of absorption.

Changes in intestinal net absorption of a sodium chloride solution produced by atropine in normal and vagotomized dogs.

TIDBALL, C. S. AND M. E. TIDBALL. Changes in intestinal net absoqfhon of a sodium chloride solution produced by atropine in normal and vagotomized dogs. Am. J. Physiol. 193(1): 25-28. q&-Net absorption of 1% NaCl was studied in acute experiments in dogs anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital. In dogs with intact vagi, net absorption was increased by atropine and then decreased below the preatro...

Enhancement of sodium intestinal secretion in relation to absorption in malnourished rats. Hyperosmolar challenge.

Two experimental models were tried in young malnourished rats in order to study effect of an hyperosmolar challenge in the small intestine on the bi-directional fluxes of sodium. Weanling rats were fed with energy restricted diets. In model I 1 mL of NaCl 900 mOsm/kg was introduced in the small intestine of the rats and left from 5 up to 70 min, in order to determine the moment of higher net Na...

Neural mediation of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide inhibitory effect on jejunal alanine absorption.

It was recently shown that vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) inhibits rat jejunal alanine absorption, an effect that was significantly reduced by vagotomy. This study assesses the role of capsaicin-sensitive primary afferents (CSPA) and the myenteric plexus in the inhibition of rat jejunal alanine absorption by VIP. Continuous intravenous infusion of VIP (11.2 ng ⋅ kg-1 ⋅ min-1) reduced a...

Intestinal ion transport: effect of norepinephrine, pilocarpine, and atropine.

The effects of parenteral pilocarpine, atropine, and norepinephrine on salt and water transport were studied in jejunum and ileum of anesthetized rats. Pilocarpine increased jejunal transmural PD, reduced absorption of Na, K, HCO3, and H2O, and increased secretion of Cl; in ileum, it caused secretion of Na and H2O, elicited secretion of K, and reduced the absorption of Cl. In both segments, per...

Indirect evidence for cholinergic inhibition of intestinal bicarbonate absorption in humans.

BACKGROUND The aim of the study was to test the hypothesis that in the fasting state, proximal intestinal HCO3- absorption, which depends on villus Na+/H+ exchanger activity, is tonically inhibited by a cholinergic atropine sensitive mechanism. SUBJECTS The experiments were performed in 34 healthy volunteers and in eight patients with intestinal villus atrophy. METHODS HCO3- absorption was ...
